What Is Black Maca?

Black Maca is a variety of the main Peruvian Maca root species (Lepidium meyeni). The species grows in a range of colors from white, to off white, light pink to dark purple/red and light gray to dark gray or black.

2. In 2011 2 different studies, one from China and one from Peru found that Black Colored Maca helped laboratory mice improve their memory and concentration skills. So, Who Should Take Black Maca?

Independent of the research listed above I have noticed 2 things in particular when taking this variety of the root: 

• First, it gave a stronger increase in libido and sexual performance
• Second, it seems to provide more stamina and to help build muscle more effectively than the other varieties of Maca

Based on my experience combined with the research listed above, I feel that Black Maca is the best choice for all of the following cases.

Organic Black Colored Maca vs. Non-Organic

It's always important to consider the source of your Maca powder. Unfortunately, many companies do sell inferior Maca or Maca from previous harvests in order to increase profits. I've even seen Maca that's obviously been cut with some other ingredient.

Also, event though, Peru has banned all GMO (genetically modified organisms) from it's agriculture until 2021 (yippie!), it doesn't mean that all product is grown organically. Some farms do use pesticides and chemical fertilizers. That's why it's important to choose organic Black Maca whenever possible. Also consider that the studies listed above were completed with high quality and organically grown Black Maca roots.

Luckily there are many farms in Peru that are dedicated to growing Maca roots in the traditional manner which allows the land to rest properly between plantings and which takes advantage of natural fertilizing techniques.
